Alcoholism figures amongst teenagers are startling. The menace of alcoholism is so wide spread in the U.S that over 700,000 people get addiction treatment in various rehab centers or private counselors every day.
What is really disappointing is that what these young people think as ‘fashion, in-thing and freedom’, is in fact the short cut to misery and death.
These days, teenagers take to alcohol just like the fish take to water. Absolutely no problem at all! In typical Hollywood fashion, goblets and jars filled with liquor are gulped down, without giving a thought to the adverse repercussions.
A large portion of alcohol intake is broken down in the liver. As the consumption of alcohol increases, the liver is overused, resulting in disorders and malfunctions.
This organ thus becomes the primary location of alcohol’s damage. The first stage of the liver damage is liver enlargement, followed by alcoholic hepatitis wherein liver cells swell, inflame, and eventually die.
The third and the most risky stage is liver cirrhosis in which fibrous scar tissues are formed, hindering the flow of blood through the liver.
The teenager, by starting the liquor intake early, is only expediting the liver damage.
The need of the hour is enhanced parents’ involvement, educating the youth about the harmful effects of alcohol so that the need for alcohol rehab does not arise.
